Rivers Detour
Management of Forested Water Retention Areas
International Congress
Project Description:
The floods on the rivers Elbe and Oder provided compelling evidence: Land-use changes significantly enhanced the risk of floods in river catchments. In order to protect citizens and economic goods from such natural disasters, there is an urgent need for flood retention areas along rivers and streams. Because of urban development in our floodplains, often only forested or agricultural areas may be used for facilities designed to provide extended detention.
Forested water retention areas are within the focus of the EU-research project FOWARA (Forested Water Retention Areas). These issues are addressed by scientists from a wide range of disciplines whose approaches include natural sciences, silvicultural practices as well as the fostering of the co operation between planning authorities, municipalities and the public.
The international congress “Rivers Detour” offers a platform for a broad spectrum of groups of interest. Forest owners, foresters, operators of water retention areas, planning authorities, political decision makers and researchers will report on their latest results and will share their experiences. The goal is to find solutions for a responsible and sustainable management of the resource “forest” in water retention areas.
Project Partners:
Ten partners from three countries are involved in this joint international research project. Research institutions from The Netherlands and from the universities of Freiburg (Germany), Strasbourg and Metz (both France) are working together with water managing authorities and private experts.
Further project information is provided in the World Wide Web on the project webpage:
