Project Description:
The floods on the rivers Elbe and Oder provided compelling evidence: Land-use changes significantly enhanced the risk of floods in river catchments. In order to protect citizens and economic goods from such natural disasters, there is an urgent need for flood retention areas along rivers and streams. Because of urban development in our floodplains, often only forested or agricultural areas may be used for facilities designed to provide extended detention.
Forested water retention areas are within the focus of the EU-research project FOWARA (Forested Water Retention Areas). These issues are addressed by scientists from a wide range of disciplines whose approaches include natural sciences, silvicultural practices as well as the fostering of the co operation between planning authorities, municipalities and the public.
